The most popular and accessible path is the Mountain Track, also known as the Pony Track. It begins at Glen Nevis Visitor Centre and takes 6–8 hours round trip for most hikers.
🪜 Step-by-Step: Climbing Ben Nevis
Step 1: Start at Glen Nevis Visitor Centre
Cross the bridge and begin the gradual climb through lush surroundings, following the well-marked Mountain Track.
Step 2: The Zig-Zags Begin
After a steady climb, the trail starts to zig-zag up the mountain. This section is exposed and demands energy — pace yourself.
Step 3: The Halfway Lochan (Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe)
This scenic spot marks about ⅓ of the climb. It's a great place to rest, hydrate, and take in the views.
Step 4: Ascent into the Boulder Field
The trail becomes steeper and rockier as you approach the upper section. Follow the cairns (stone markers).
Step 5: Summit Plateau and Observatory Ruins
At the top, you'll find the remains of the 19th-century weather observatory. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Isle of Skye!
Step 6: Descent – Take Your Time
Descending takes almost as long as climbing — watch your footing, especially on the rocky sections.
🌦️ Weather Warnings
Ben Nevis is notorious for quick weather changes. It can be sunny at the base and snowing at the summit — even in summer. Check the forecast and turn back if conditions worsen.
